It’s safe to say that anyone who was present when Cobalt Brass last played for
us in January 2020 went home with a spring in their step. This award-winning
brass quintet had come with a growing reputation and they certainly didn’t
disappoint. Their playing had the vigour of youth, but the polish of mature musicians
and their programme was, as they had promised, diverse, engaging and accessible.
Its variety was a testimony to their versatility and allowed them to demonstrate the
rich breadth of colours and moods of which the brass quintet is capable. From J. S.
Bach to New York New York and from Malcolm Arnold to Lennon and McCartney,
there was something for everyone.
Based in Manchester, the ensemble is made up of five young freelance musicians, who met whilst studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. Since graduating, they have performed together in a number of high profile festivals and concert series, as well as individually appearing with some of the country’s leading orchestras.
In their performances, Cobalt Brass explore a vast landscape of different musical styles and genres, drawing their inspiration from the worlds of classical, jazz, and pop music. They are also passionate about commissioning new music, and regularly approach composers to write for them. In this concert in the run-up to Christmas, they will again be performing an eclectic programme of pieces, with a few seasonal favourites thrown in for good measure.
Please note the day and time of this concert – Sunday at 6 p.m.
