About this Audio

Audio : St Helens does ‘Boston Pops’

A few years ago, the St Helens Sinfonietta performed a concert which emulated the popular Boston Pops concerts in the USA. The Boston Pops Orchestra was set up in 1885 as an adjunct to the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
From 1930 to 1980, it was directed by Arthur Fidler who was determined that the image of orchestral music should be challenged and he chose a repertoire of well-known short classical pieces and music from film and musical theatre.
This Sinfonietta version took place at St Helens town hall. Click on each piece in turn to hear the orchestra play. You may be able to pick out popular pieces such as the theme tune to Desert Island Discs, as well as theme tunes to popular tv shows such as Doctor Finlay and the Onedin Line. Listen to the others and you will recognise many of them.
We hope you enjoy listening to these pieces, and perhaps you will come and listen to one of our concerts live!
